Building and Maintenance
The long term plan is for twelve acres of the land to hold several small houses for children, staff, and volunteer missionaries as well as a 2-level multi-function building, which will include a cafeteria, library, sanctuary, offices, recreation room, vocational training rooms, and an infirmary.
We would eventually like to use four acres for sports fields including a soccer field, track field, handball/volleyball field, basketball court, and tennis court.
A lot of work has been done to get to where we are now, as there was no infrastructure to begin with. The land had to be cleared, a well to be dug, and a water tower to be built. Solar power was installed and the electrical wiring had to be done. A temporary bridge over the little stream outside the entrance gate had to be made also, but is still awaiting a permanent make-over.
We started out with a roofed structure to be able to produce and store our own bricks. Then followed a little kitchen building with storage rooms as well as a little laundry room building (laundry is mostly done outside, but during the rainy season a dry place is needed). Another building, the Miranda house, houses our small library and will also serve as the home for the older girls.
By now we have a house for the boys (Peace), a house for the girls (Love), a gathering place with a little kitchen that serves as a dry place for meals and other activities during the rainy season. Our guest house (Joy) to house volunteers, short term missionaries, or guests is finished as well. The fourth house (Kindness), the home for the resident staff/missionary couple is nearly finished, despite many challenges, an enormous rise in material prices, as well as a shortage of materials in Cameroon, especially since the beginning of the pandemic.
A great need we see at this point is a school building. The existing schools the children attend are not the best and our children are tutored a great deal by our staff after school. We would like to provide a better education to them and the children of the surrounding area.
The estimated cost to build the entire primary school, completely with all fittings, like tables, chairs and blackboards is about $120,000. We can start building as soon as we have funds towards the school and the weather conditions are right.
