Agriculture

Agriculture plays a big part in Cameroon and a big part of the population is involved in farming. We want our children at Manjo to learn about this important aspect of Cameroonian life.

Our goal is self-sustainability. We want to be able to grow our own food at MCH as well as sell it in the market. The proceeds from the agricultural project would then support itself, the staff, as well as the regular expenses of the children’s home.

Five acres of land are dedicated to sustainable agriculture. The children are working with staff members to plant, tend and harvest a variety of plants. Alongside the fields, we have a small chicken coop. Not only will this farming produce fresh fruit, vegetables, soy milk, and eggs for the children to enjoy, but the aim of farming is to instill in the children a sense of purpose, ownership, and pride – all of which will help them to become confident adults who are ready and willing to give back to the community.

We have fish, snails, chickens, and goats. We are looking forward to starting a goat and pig husbandry program.

We are growing quite a few vegetables and fruits; like pineapples, avocados, yuca, beans, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and much more. As the land once was a coffee plantation a lot of the soil needs to be improved first to become useful for vegetables. We have four dedicated agricultural team members using all their knowledge and education for this project and to teach our children about farming and nutrition.
